You'll ride the Bergen Line across Hardangervidda's mountain plateau, descend the famous Flåm Railway through valleys carved by ice, and cruise the Sognefjord – Norway's longest and deepest, stretching 204 kilometers inland from the coast. Your base for two nights is the historic Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand, welcoming travelers since 1877. Wake to fjord views from your window, explore orchards and art galleries in the village, or simply claim a chair on the hotel's terrace and watch the light change on the water. The pace here is deliberately slower – Balestrand doesn't do rush. The route forms a scenic loop from Oslo: Bergen Line west to Bergen, express boat to Balestrand, Flåm Railway climbing back to the mountains, Bergen Line return. Everything's coordinated, the timing works, and you're traveling the way Norwegians prefer – by rail and boat through landscapes that make rental cars seem pointless.
