Flam Railway – One of the most scenic rail lines in Norway

Spectacular Flam Railway by Sverre Hjornevik, Flam AS

One of the most scenic rail lines in Norway is without doubt Flam Railway. A journey on this rail line is one you will surely never forget. It has been several times named one of the most spectacular rail lines in Europe. It is also one of the steepest railway lines in the world, with 80% of the journey having a gradient of 5.5%.

Experience the Flam Railway

From mountain to fjord

Flam Railway connects the charming village of Flam, on the shores of Sognefjord, with Myrdal mountain station (876 m above sea level). Myrdal is also a station of the famous Bergen Line, which means that Flam Railway connects with the Oslo-Bergen line.
So when you arrive at Myrdal or start your journey in Flam the train will already wait for you: smartly painted in dark green with gold lettering, the carriages have a real vintage feel with wood-panelled walls and chrome luggage racks.

Scenic Flam Valley

Spectacular nature

On the one-hour trip you will travel through spectacular nature, past steep mountains, foaming waterfalls, through 20 hand-dug tunnels into the spectacular Flam valley. Have your camera ready as you might want to take some pictures.
The beginning of the route from Myrdal runs through forest, dotted with red and yellow wooden houses. It passes by the Reinungvatnet mountain lake. The track then starts to descend steeply and disappears into the first of many tunnels before stopping at the Kjosfossen waterfall.

Stop at Kjosfossen waterfall

Waterfall & Norwegian folklore

Flam Railway stops at Kjosfossen waterfall and all passengers can disembark the train for a short break on a wooden platform. The waterfall is over 90 m tall and according to Norwegian folklore, it’s home to “Huldra”. These beautiful siren women bewitched passing men with their song and lured them out into the woods. Watch out as you might spot “Huldra” dancing in the waterfall.
Back on the train, windows cut into the tunnel walls give you flashes of the view down the valley.

Arrival to Flam

At Breikvam Station the track splits in two so that trains travelling in opposite directions can pass each other. Then towards the end of journey, the gradient smooths out and the valley opens up.
After your arrival to Flam you can also visit Flam Railway Documentation Centre, where you can learn more about the railway´s history and impressive construction efforts.

What our customers say:

  • Thank you for assisting us with our trip to Norway. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Kirkenes and the Snow Hotel. The arrangements you made for us were perfect. The lodging was comfortable and the excursions were fun. Tom and I rarely use the services of a travel company when we travel; you enriched our trip and made the planning easy.

  • I wanted to thank everybody. We had a wonderful trip. Everything went well and fortunately we had the chance to see the lights while on the cruise. All my friends in Turkey would like to go on a similar trip. So I will be in touch with you. Thanks again and best wishes to all of you.

  • On behalf of the group I would like to thank you and your colleagues for organizing our wonderful tour of Norway. Everything went very well including the weather, which was spectacular. We enjoyed all the hotels, the central locations you chose and the amenities, especially the lavish breakfasts. Three extra days in Oslo allowed us to tour the city at our leisure and to enjoy more of the important sights including the newly opened National Museum. The Norway in a Nutshell tour was amazing and made much easier by using your recommended porterage service between hotels in Oslo and Bergen. Both the train journeys and the boat trip were spectacular, and combined with a night in the beautiful Kviknes Hotel made for an unforgettable two days. We were very impressed by the Hurtigruten cruise, particularly the way they combined a working ship with a cruise ship, the comfortable accommodations, the food and service. It was fascinating to visit all the various ports, islands and fjords and the two included tours were excellent and informative. In the end we were glad to have the extra night in Kirkenes, to visit their lovely museum and take a trip to the Russian border. It was a good way to end the tour. Again, thank for staying with us through 2 years of pandemic postponements and changes. We certainly will recommend Fjord Travel in the future.
