This isn't a journey for those seeking constant entertainment or luxury's soft edges. Rather, it calls to the thoughtful traveler who finds luxury in silence, in the space between mountains, in the gentle sway of a fjord cruise, and in the liberty to spend an extra hour with their coffee watching village life unfold. The moderate activity level makes this suitable for most ages, though some walking is required to fully appreciate each destination.
A 6 day railway adventure into the Heart of Fjord Country
Experience the best of Norway's fjords and railways in a tour that promises to be as enriching as it is exhilarating.
Let your Norwegian story unfold at your own pace on this independent journey through landscapes that have inspired artists and adventurers for centuries. As the Bergen Line train winds through Norway's dramatic terrain, you'll watch the landscape transform from Oslo's urban pulse to the raw beauty of the western fjords.
The heart of your journey lies in the embrace of the Sognefjord, where the waters reflect mountains that plunge into the depths of Norway's longest fjord. Here, time seems to slow as you cruise past small farmsteads clinging to steep mountainsides and waterfalls threading silver paths through dark rock faces.
In Balestrand, you'll find yourself in a village that feels like a painting come to life. Dragon-style villas with their intricate wooden details tell stories of 19th-century romance with Swiss architecture, while the historic Kviknes Hotel stands as a grand dame of fjord hospitality. As evening falls, savor local cuisine while watching the changing light paint the fjord in gentle watercolor hues.
The Flåm Railway journey offers an engineering marvel that matches nature's own spectacle. As your train climbs from sea level through the Flåm Valley, each turn reveals a new perspective – from the thundering Kjosfossen waterfall to tiny mountain farms that seem frozen in time. Through 20 tunnels and past countless waterfalls, you'll experience the raw power and delicate beauty that define Norway's mountain realm.
