Sleep at Preikestolen Basecamp positioned right at the trailhead, hike to the 604-meter plateau at your own pace, then return to your lodge with the afternoon still ahead for lake activities or sauna. Meanwhile, Stavanger provides three nights of coastal city atmosphere bookending your mountain day. Preikestolen remains Norway's most iconic natural viewpoint for good reason. Stand on a flat rock plateau suspended above Lysefjord with nothing between you and a 604-meter vertical drop – just you, the edge, and that surge of adrenaline as you look straight down to the fjord below. The approach hike climbs through forests and boulder fields, ascending stone staircases built by Nepalese Sherpas, before emerging onto the plateau where glacial ice carved away everything except this natural platform jutting into open air. Perfect for active travelers who want Norway's bucket-list moment without sacrificing urban comforts. Spend your Stavanger days exploring the preserved wooden architecture of Gamle Stavanger, discovering Norway's best street art collection, or adding optional fjord cruises and culinary walks. The overnight at Preikestolen means experiencing the hike properly – not as a rushed day trip squeezed between transport schedules, but as the centerpiece of a tour that balances wilderness adventure with city exploration. A perfect blend of city break comfort and true Norwegian adventure. Photo by Rødne. The hike to the summit is just as amazing as the plateau. Photo by Lars Finborud. The compact layout keeps most attractions within walking distance. Spend the afternoon and evening exploring at your own pace. Gamle Stavanger – the old town – features over 170 preserved wooden houses painted white, their narrow lanes climbing the hillside above the harbor. The waterfront area offers cafés and restaurants with views across the water. Street art covers walls throughout the city center – Stavanger earned recognition as Norway's street art capital through the annual NuArt Festival. Consider adding an optional Lysefjord cruise or RIB safari – both provide water-level views of Preikestolen before you hike to the top tomorrow. The silent electric cruise glides past waterfalls and cliffs, while the RIB safari speeds through the fjord with stops at caves and beneath towering rock faces. Both available during checkout. Photo by Paul Edmundson From city to summit After breakfast, board the bus to Preikestolen Basecamp, check into your lodge and prepare for the hike. The 8-kilometer round-trip to Preikestolen typically takes 4-5 hours, climbing through varied terrain. The trail begins in forest before emerging onto boulder fields and ascending stone staircases built into the rock. Red-painted markers guide the route. The final approach crosses relatively flat terrain before reaching the plateau – a flat rock shelf extending over the cliff edge 604 meters above Lysefjord. Tips for the hike: Clothing: Wear sturdy hiking boots and dress in layers to adjust to changing weather conditions. Bring rain gear, as mountain weather can shift quickly. Food and water: Pack enough food and water for the entire hike. A kiosk at the parking lot offers snacks and drinks, but once you’re on the trail, there are no facilities — just nature, stunning views, and fellow hikers. Trail navigation: The route starts from the basecamp and is well-marked with red-painted distance markers, making it easy to follow. Safety first: Stay aware of your surroundings and be extra cautious near steep edges, especially in wet conditions, to ensure a safe and enjoyable hike. Return to the basecamp where dinner is included this evening. The lodge sits beside Refsvannet lake. Consider renting a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard to explore the calm water, or use the floating sauna on the lake or the traditional lafta sauna with cold plunge pool beside the lodge. Or spend the time exploring Stavanger's street art – works by international artists cover walls throughout the city center, creating an open-air gallery that changes annually. Don't miss Fargegaten (Color Street) – an Instagram favorite where rainbow-painted houses line a pedestrian street in the heart of the old town. The old town's wooden houses and harbor cafés provide a relaxed setting for your final hours in the city. Tour concludes after breakfast.
