The route features three distinct landscapes: the narrow UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord where vertical cliffs create dramatic light effects on the water, the steep Flåm Railway descent through hand-carved tunnels and past waterfalls, and the high mountain crossing of Hardangervidda plateau where nothing grows except hardy grasses and moss. Travel direction remains flexible – begin in Bergen's colorful harbor or Oslo's modern waterfront, spend a night in the fjord village of Flåm, then complete your journey in the other city. Flåm sits at the innermost point of the Aurlandsfjord, surrounded by mountains that rise nearly straight from sea level. The village provides a natural pause between the dramatic railway and fjord segments of your journey. This combination has earned its reputation as Norway's signature route. The landscapes deliver genuine scale and drama, with each segment offering different perspectives on the country's distinctive topography – from water level in the narrow fjord to mountain plateau at 1,237 meters above sea level. Over approximately one hour, the train drops 863 meters through 20 tunnels carved through rock, many by hand during the railway's construction.
