Where can you see the Northern Lights in Norway?

The best place to see the Northern Lights is in the Northern, Arctic parts of Norway – in the Northern lights zone. From time to time the Northern Lights are visible as far south as Trondheim, and in rare occasions they might even show up in Oslo.

The Northern Lights are visible between October and March when the sky is clear, depending on the Northern Lights activity. The visibility is best in the darkness, outside the light pollution of towns.

In the Arctic town of Tromso

Norway’s «Northern Lights capital» – offers a maximum of Northern Lights activity, as the town is ideally located in the middle of the Northern Lights zone.

Tromso is beautifully located surrounded by mountain peaks, islands and fjords. In Tromso you will find a wide range of Northern Lights evening trips, along with snow based activities such as dog sledding, reindeer sledge and snowmobile safari.

Tromso is the northernmost university town in Europe, with a vibrant night life despite its size.

IN THE ARCTIC TOWN OF KIRKENES

At the «top of Europe», Kirkenes is located far north east in Norway, close to the Russian border. Kirkenes is also located in the Northern Lights zone, with cold, dry winters and normally a lot of snow.

Kirkenes, a former mining town, offers perfect surroundings for Northern Lights spotting as well as adventurous activities such as king crab safari, dog sledding to the Arctic wilderness and snowmobile trips, and no mass tourism.

The main winter attraction in Kirkenes is the magic Snowhotel, perfectly located outside the lights of the town. Each December they build the amazing Snowhotel next to a narrow, Arctic fjord. For those who prefer not to sleep inside the Snowhotel, just see it, you can sleep in a comfortable, tiny, wooden Gamme chalet, located next to the Snowhotel.

IN THE ARCTIC TOWN OF ALTA

Alta, also known as “The Town of the Northern Lights,” is located 375 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Alta enjoys a good, dry and stable climate, with many nights with clear skies that allow the Northern Lights to appear most of the nights.

The main winter attraction in Alta is the Igloo Hotel (ice/snow hotel), perfectly located outside the lights of the town. Alta also offers a wide range of Northern Lights trips, along with snow based activities such as dog sledding, reindeer sledge and snowmobile safari.

About the Northern Lights

The spectacular Northern Lights – nature’s own light show- are solar winds that meet the atmosphere in a zone around the magnetic North Pole, forming arches, waves and curls of light moving across the sky, with sudden rays of light shooting down from space.

On behalf of the group I would like to thank you and your colleagues for organizing our wonderful tour of Norway. Everything went very well including the weather, which was spectacular. We enjoyed all the hotels, the central locations you chose and the amenities, especially the lavish breakfasts. Three extra days in Oslo allowed us to tour the city at our leisure and to enjoy more of the important sights including the newly opened National Museum. The Norway in a Nutshell tour was amazing and made much easier by using your recommended porterage service between hotels in Oslo and Bergen. Both the train journeys and the boat trip were spectacular, and combined with a night in the beautiful Kviknes Hotel made for an unforgettable two days. We were very impressed by the Hurtigruten cruise, particularly the way they combined a working ship with a cruise ship, the comfortable accommodations, the food and service. It was fascinating to visit all the various ports, islands and fjords and the two included tours were excellent and informative. In the end we were glad to have the extra night in Kirkenes, to visit their lovely museum and take a trip to the Russian border. It was a good way to end the tour. Again, thank for staying with us through 2 years of pandemic postponements and changes. We certainly will recommend Fjord Travel in the future.
