See the Northern Lights in Norway

Northern Lights Tromso by Gaute Bruvik, Nordnorsk Reiseliv

The spectacular Northern Lights – nature’s own light show- are solar winds that meet the atmosphere in a zone around the magnetic North Pole, forming arches, waves and curls of light moving across the sky, with sudden rays of light shooting down from space.

The Northern Lights are visible between October and March when the sky is clear, depending on the Northern Lights activity.

The best place to see the Northern Lights is in the Northern, Arctic parts of Norway. From time to time the Northern Lights are visible as far south as Trondheim, and in rare occasions they might even show up in Oslo.

The Arctic town of Kirkenes

At the «top of Europe», Kirkenes is located far north east in Norway, close to the Russian border. Kirkenes is also located in the Northern Lights zone, with cold, dry winters and normally a lot of snow.
Kirkenes, a former mining town, offers perfect surroundings for Northern Lights spotting as well as adventurous activities such as king crab safari, dog sledding to the Arctic wilderness and snowmobile trips, and no mass tourism.
The main winter attraction in Kirkenes is the magic Snowhotel, perfectly located outside the lights of the town. Each December they build the amazing Snowhotel next to a narrow, Arctic fjord. For those who prefer not to sleep inside the Snowhotel, just see it, you can sleep in a comfortable, tiny, wooden Gamme chalet, located next to the Snowhotel.

  • We just recently completed the Tromso, Northern Lights & Arctic Coast tour. I am writing to say what an amazing tour we had. Everything ran smoothly without an issue, the accommodation was fantastic and the tours were brilliant. We cannot fault the package at all.
I would also like to thank Franziska and Lene, they both were fantastic in answering all my questions promptly, whilst booking the tour.
Thank you for a wonderful and memorable holiday!

  • Thank you for assisting us with our trip to Norway. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Kirkenes and the Snow Hotel. The arrangements you made for us were perfect. The lodging was comfortable and the excursions were fun. Tom and I rarely use the services of a travel company when we travel; you enriched our trip and made the planning easy.

    Alison, United States

  • I wanted to thank everybody. We had a wonderful trip. Everything went well and fortunately we had the chance to see the lights while on the cruise. All my friends in Turkey would like to go on a similar trip. So I will be in touch with you. Thanks again and best wishes to all of you.
