Top of Europe Aurora Arctic Adventure – A really exotic Northern Lights trip taking you to Kirkenes, Tana and the remote settlement of Kongsfjord. Experience an Aurora safari, a visit to a Sami family, reindeer sledding as well as a stay at Kongsfjord Guesthouse, located on the Varanger peninsulaEnjoy the tranquility and untouched nature on a snowshoe walk or get to know one of the 30 inhabitants of Kongsfjord, a local artist.

This trip is semi-guided in a small group from day 4  to day 6, whereas the rest of the trip (day 1-3 & day 6) is an individual/unescorted trip

This tour is flexible and you may add exciting activities to your trip.

First night in Oslo

Individual arrival to Oslo. Check in at the centrally located, elegant Bristol hotel or similar. Bristol is located close to the Karl Johansgate main street, the Royal Palace & the main shopping areas of Oslo.
You can take the Airport bus directly to the hotel from the Oslo Gardermoen airport.

Travel to Arctic Kirkenes

Morning flight to the Arctic town of Kirkenessituated by the Barents sea close to the Russian border. Kirkenes is ideally located in the middle of the Northern Lights zone.

Transfer to Kirkenes Snow Hotel and check in at an elegantly-designed wooden Gamme cabin. The package includes dinner and breakfast at Laven restaurant.

Northern Lights in Kirkenes

Northern Lights hunt

In the evening you will be picked up by the Aurora Express for an exciting hunt for the Northern Lights.
A knowledgeable guide will check the latest magnetic forecast and decide whether to take you by minibus towards the Russian border or in the opposite direction towards the Finnish border, in search of the Northern Lights. Transfer back to the Snow hotel after the trip.

Kirkenes – Tana – Kongsfjord

Meet your driver guide and head towards Tana. On the 160 km drive through picturesque ever-changing Arctic landscape you will make interesting educational stops en route.
Your driver guide will take you first to Neiden in order to discover one of the smallest churches in Norway. Possible stop at Skolt Sami Museum. Driving towards Tana continues with interesting stories told on the way.
Crossing the Tana River using the ice road, if conditions allow. The ice road is open only during the winter months when the ice conditions on the river allow for safe passage for cars.  An experience in itself!

Visit to a Sami family

Arrival to family Gaup around midday. Traditional local lunch served in a large Sami tent while sitting around the flames of the open fireplace in the middle. First-hand stories about Sami life, handcraft and heritage in an authentic environment, told by real people who are still living it.
Do some reindeer sledding before the journey continues to Kongsfjord. Arrival to the guesthouse in the early evening. The package includes dinner and breakfast.

Spend the day in Kongsfjord. Enjoy the tranquility and the untouched Arctic nature. Do some snowshoe walking, visit the small village of Kongsfjord and get to know a local art studio. Here you can learn about the magic of engraving yourself.

  • On behalf of the group I would like to thank you and your colleagues for organizing our wonderful tour of Norway. Everything went very well including the weather, which was spectacular. We enjoyed all the hotels, the central locations you chose and the amenities, especially the lavish breakfasts. Three extra days in Oslo allowed us to tour the city at our leisure and to enjoy more of the important sights including the newly opened National Museum. The Norway in a Nutshell tour was amazing and made much easier by using your recommended porterage service between hotels in Oslo and Bergen. Both the train journeys and the boat trip were spectacular, and combined with a night in the beautiful Kviknes Hotel made for an unforgettable two days. We were very impressed by the Hurtigruten cruise, particularly the way they combined a working ship with a cruise ship, the comfortable accommodations, the food and service. It was fascinating to visit all the various ports, islands and fjords and the two included tours were excellent and informative. In the end we were glad to have the extra night in Kirkenes, to visit their lovely museum and take a trip to the Russian border. It was a good way to end the tour. Again, thank for staying with us through 2 years of pandemic postponements and changes. We certainly will recommend Fjord Travel in the future.
