Norway rail trips: The Bergen Line

Experience the Bergen Railway by Tore Bjorback Amblie, NSB

Bergen Line – one of the highlights in Norway!

Bergen line is an eco-friendly, electrified mountain railway connecting Norway’s two largest cities; Oslo and Bergen.
It is the highest mainline railway in Northern Europe, crossing the Hardangervidda mountain plateau at 1300 m above sea level.
The line is some 500 km long, with Finse as the highest station with an altitude of 1222 m above sea level.
The entire journey takes approx. 7 hours.

Flam Railway In Winter By Paul Edmundson, Visit Flam

The Myrdal station in winter time!

Beautiful scenery en route

The Bergen Line takes you through beautiful scenery, the Hallingdal valley, across the Hardangervidda National Park with views of mountain peaks and the Hardangerjokulen glacier at Finse, rocky areas with tunnels, the Vosso river & the Sorfjord between Voss and Bergen.
The line makes stops at villages and popular ski resorts en route.
A lot of Norwegians living in Oslo and Bergen have a “hytte” (mountain chalet) along the Bergen line, due to the easy access by train.
The mountain areas are normally covered in snow between October/November and April. During these months the locomotives often carry a snow plow at the front.

An important transport route

The Bergen Line offers both transport from villages along the line, as well as travel between Oslo and Bergen, being the main means of transportation for the people living in the villages along the line, as well as for people from Oslo & Bergen visiting the mountain villages.
Spending the week end in a “hytte” or hotel along the line is a common week end activity for Norwegians.
Parts of the line visit stations without road access, such as Finse and Myrdal.
The famous Flam Railway is a side line off the Bergen line, starting at Myrdal mountain station, descending through the beautiful Flam Valley, finishing at sea level in the tiny Flam village by the Sognefjord

Travel tips for the Bergen line

The Bergen Line is an ideal starting point for a trip to the Norwegian fjords. You can start in Oslo and take it across to Myrdal, then change to the spectacular Flam Railway, taking you down to the Sognefjord and the village of Flam.
There are boat and ferry trips from Flam, both to the Unesco Naeroyfjord and to the main Sognefjord, taking you all the way to Bergen, with calls at tiny fjord villages en route.

What our customers say:

  • We just recently completed the Tromso, Northern Lights & Arctic Coast tour. I am writing to say what an amazing tour we had. Everything ran smoothly without an issue, the accommodation was fantastic and the tours were brilliant. We cannot fault the package at all. I would also like to thank Franziska and Lene, they both were fantastic in answering all my questions promptly, whilst booking the tour. Thank you for a wonderful and memorable holiday!

  • I wanted to thank everybody. We had a wonderful trip. Everything went well and fortunately we had the chance to see the lights while on the cruise. All my friends in Turkey would like to go on a similar trip. So I will be in touch with you. Thanks again and best wishes to all of you.

  • On behalf of the group I would like to thank you and your colleagues for organizing our wonderful tour of Norway. Everything went very well including the weather, which was spectacular. We enjoyed all the hotels, the central locations you chose and the amenities, especially the lavish breakfasts. Three extra days in Oslo allowed us to tour the city at our leisure and to enjoy more of the important sights including the newly opened National Museum. The Norway in a Nutshell tour was amazing and made much easier by using your recommended porterage service between hotels in Oslo and Bergen. Both the train journeys and the boat trip were spectacular, and combined with a night in the beautiful Kviknes Hotel made for an unforgettable two days. We were very impressed by the Hurtigruten cruise, particularly the way they combined a working ship with a cruise ship, the comfortable accommodations, the food and service. It was fascinating to visit all the various ports, islands and fjords and the two included tours were excellent and informative. In the end we were glad to have the extra night in Kirkenes, to visit their lovely museum and take a trip to the Russian border. It was a good way to end the tour. Again, thank for staying with us through 2 years of pandemic postponements and changes. We certainly will recommend Fjord Travel in the future.
