The line’s elevation difference is 863 m; with ten stations, twenty tunnels and one bridge. The maximum gradient is 5.5 % (1:18), making it one of the steepest railways in Europe. Because of its steep gradient and picturesque nature, the Flam Railway has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in Norway.

This amazing rail trip is a highlight and a natural part of a visit to the Norwegian fjords. The railway is open all year. From Flam village there are ferry trips to the narrow UNESCO Naeroyfjord all year, and during the summer season there is a daily boat trip on the main Sognefjord to Bergen, with calls at tiny fjord villages en route.
