Tromso is not only the largest town north of the Arctic Circle, it also has a fascinating history; hunting in the Arctic Ocean, timber transport from Russian rivers, the Pomor trade and coal mining. The battle to survive in the hard but naturally resource-rich far north provided hard-earned experiences that, more recently, have turned Tromso into a research and education centre.

The Arctic Cathedral

You will start the excursion by taking the well-known cable car up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen, 421 metres above sea level. From the viewing platform at the upper station, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Tromso and the surrounding islands, mountains and fjords.
The tour continues to the famous Arctic Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece and town landmark. Built in 1965, the design of the church was inspired by the beliefs and natural surroundings evident throughout northern Norway, and features northern Europe’s largest stained-glass window.
During your excursion you will also visit the Polaria Centre, where you will find an Arctic aquarium, seal pool, educational displays and a panoramic cinema. Here you’ll be able to watch a movie with theme from the Polar regions. You will also get to see when the seals are fed.

In the end we were glad to have the extra night in Kirkenes, to visit their lovely museum and take a trip to the Russian border. It was a good way to end the tour. Again, thank for staying with us through 2 years of pandemic postponements and changes. We certainly will recommend Fjord Travel in the future.
