Where and how to see the Northern Lights

Arctic Norway is ideally located in the middle of the Northern Lights zone. From Oslo it takes approx. 2 hours by domestic flight to get to our main Northern Lights destinations; Tromso & Kirkenes, both of them located in the middle of the Northern Lights zone.

THE ARCTIC TOWN OF KIRKENES

Kirkenes is located about as far northeast you can get in Norway, close to the Russian border & the Arctic wilderness. Kirkenes is located by an Arctic fjord cutting in from the Barents Sea. The winter climate in Kirkenes is normally cold and dry, with snow throughout the winter. Kirkenes is the home of the amazing Snowhotel.
In Kirkenes you can add snowmobile safari & king crab fishing.

Tromso is beautifully located on the northwest coast, surrounded by mountain peaks & protected from the Norwegian Sea by Arctic islands. Tromso has a coastal climate, milder than in Kirkenes due to the Gulf Stream current along the Norwegian coast.

ABOUT OUR NORTHERN LIGHTS TRIPS

Our packages are flexible; you can add nights and adventurous activities, combine two packages, choose to spend the first or final night at an airport hotel.

Our packages include all travel within Norway, along with hotels and activities. You just have to arrange for your international flight to Norway. For your convenience you can choose an airport hotel on the arrival day to Norway, and also for the final night in Norway if you have a late incoming or outbound flight (applies for Oslo Gardermoen Airport).

You will be provided with appropriate, warm clothing for the scheduled, outdoor activities.

The travel packages are unescorted/ independent, hence you will not be part of a group. You can read more here.

We enjoyed all the hotels, the central locations you chose and the amenities, especially the lavish breakfasts. Three extra days in Oslo allowed us to tour the city at our leisure and to enjoy more of the important sights including the newly opened National Museum. The Norway in a Nutshell tour was amazing and made much easier by using your recommended porterage service between hotels in Oslo and Bergen. Both the train journeys and the boat trip were spectacular, and combined with a night in the beautiful Kviknes Hotel made for an unforgettable two days. We were very impressed by the Hurtigruten cruise, particularly the way they combined a working ship with a cruise ship, the comfortable accommodations, the food and service. It was fascinating to visit all the various ports, islands and fjords and the two included tours were excellent and informative. In the end we were glad to have the extra night in Kirkenes, to visit their lovely museum and take a trip to the Russian border. It was a good way to end the tour. Again, thank for staying with us through 2 years of pandemic postponements and changes. We certainly will recommend Fjord Travel in the future.
